3 Step Rewind Method

The 3 Step Rewind Method is a gentle and safe way of working to lift the heavy feelings and symptoms that can remain after a difficult or traumatic event such as:

Pregnancy and giving birth
Postnatal or infant feeding experience
Witnessing a birth or providing care or support to someone during the perinatal period
Phobias and fears such as flying, spiders or medical procedures
Any event where you felt frightened, powerless and out of control such as a road traffic accident, domestic incident or workplace bullying and harassment.

Sometimes these events leave people emotionally scarred and symptoms can include:

panic attacks

nightmares and flashbacks

anger and irritability

numbness

tearfulness

avoidance and all reminders of the trauma

problems in relationships

feelings of failure, helplessness and being unable to move on from the event

 

The fight or flight response is one of our most primitive survival systems and is designed to allow us to act in the face of life threatening danger. The highly aroused emotions of fear and helplessness present during the trauma became inextricably, biologically linked to the memory of the event. 

From a neurological point of view these symptoms can be compared to a faulty burglar alarm that is triggered and goes off for no reason. A person suffering from PTSD symptoms is triggering their fight or flight response unnecessarily when there is no present dancer, constantly reliving what happened and igniting the feelings all over again each time. 

The rational, thinking part of our brain (pre frontal cortex) can be thought of as the policeman in this scenario. He tries to reassure the owner (the traumatised person) that nothing is wrong but he can’t be heard over the alarm. 

This is why sometimes well-intentioned advice to ‘move on’ or ‘get over’ what happened is pointless because the connection has been made and so is extremely difficult to rationalise or to wilfully stop the thoughts or feelings. The simple but effective steps of this technique move someone through their past traumatic experience, through to understanding it’s current impact on their day to day life, before looking ahead to a future that they desire. 

The full 3 step rewind is typically done over 2x 60 minute sessions via zoom following an initial 30 minute consultation.

The first session is an opportunity for you to tell your story (if you wish) and to identify how your experience is effecting you and how you would prefer to feel moving forward. I guide you through a relaxation where I help you to activate your own natural ability to heal yourself through guided use of your memory of the event and your own imagination. I then guide you to begin to look ahead to a future that you desire. This is done in a gentle way and many clients feel refreshed and calm afterwards. The second session is an opportunity to further build on the progress in session one and on the future through another deep relaxation and visualisation techniques.
